The Ammath Wizard quest is completed in the wizard's chambers north of the entrance staircase in the Lower Keep: open the metal doors there with the Gem-studded Key, destroy Thygaast Ammath's phylactery at the foot of the bed, then kill Thygaast herself. The route and combat details below come from a player walkthrough on GameFAQs, written for the original Pool of Radiance Ruins of Myth Drannor release from 2001.

Prerequisites and where to start

Beriand gives the quest during Event 89 of the player walkthrough, after you have received the Medallion of Mystra: keep asking Beriand for tales of city buildings five times, then tales of the catacombs five times, and he mentions the wizard whose laboratory lies deep in the Catacombs. You reach it in the Lower Keep, in the main hall, where a set of metal doors flanked by two huge stone pillars stands directly north of the staircase.

  1. Enter the laboratory

Use the Gem-studded Key on the metal doors. Entering shows a message that the room is alive with the presence of a wizard of old, advancing the quest.
  2. Clear the first battle

Head northeast and defeat a Dark Naga, 2 Master Spectres, 2 Master Wights, a Zombie Lord, 2 Master Shadows and 2 Mohrg. Kill the Dark Naga first and let your Cleric use Turn Undead on the rest; Chain Lightning aimed at the center of a group works well.
  3. Search the antechamber

Head north to the long antechamber of the main room and search its 3 bookshelves.
  4. Destroy the phylactery

In the bedroom off the antechamber you will find the phylactery, trapped, at the foot of the bed. Have the whole party stand back and send one strong character in alone to destroy it, so only that character risks the trap.
  5. Loot the side rooms

Search the bookcase in the room northeast of the antechamber for a Decaying Parchment and a Scroll, then search the cabinet, floor items, bookcase and table in the southeast rooms.
  6. Fight Thygaast

Search the dark brick patch on the southwest wall to find a hidden door. Cast Globe of Invulnerability with a Sorcerer in the doorway, then step a melee fighter just inside to trigger the battle. Send your melee fighters at Thygaast Ammath immediately so she cannot cast, and hack her down — this completes the quest. Loot her 3 chests, bookcase and table.

If something seems to fail

  • No quest update on entering: confirm you have the quest from Beriand and that you opened the doors with the Gem-studded Key, not another key.
  • Party takes heavy damage at the phylactery: the trap hits whoever is close, so pull everyone back before sending in the destroyer.
  • Thygaast keeps casting: the walkthrough's fix is engagement in the ambush round itself; melee must reach her before she gets a spell off.

Checked on 2026-11-07 against the GameFAQs walkthrough above and the official Steam page for the re-release, which lists only Windows and restores the 2001 game with bug fixes; player-reported item drops and encounter layouts for this specific room remain unverified against the re-release build.
