Clearing the Center of the First Cellar in Pool of Radiance
Quick answer
Clear the First Cellar's center by fighting east from the door into the room with four open wooden doors and the healing fountain, then looping southeast into the closed-door room on the southwest wall where the Master Wights wait. The route through the central area
Follow this order as written in the community walkthrough:
Head east from your entry door
Go east into a room with 4 open wooden doors. Approach the healing fountain inside to trigger the first battle: 4 Mohrg and 9 Wights. Defeat them with your established undead tactics, then use the fountain to heal the party.Loop southeast
Exit through the southeast door and go southeast to another open wooden door. Pass through the opposing open wooden door, then head northwest to a closed wooden door on the southwest wall.Clear the closed-door room
Beyond that door wait 4 Wights and 2 Master Wights. Destroy the Wights first and hold the Master Wights with Turn Undead — your Cleric's Turn Undead can keep them paralyzed for several rounds, making the fight manageable.
- Rest before starting: most rooms with closed doors allow rest, shown by a green rest icon.
- Keep your Cleric's Turn Undead available for the Master Wight room.
- Save before opening the closed wooden door on the southwest wall.
You know the center is clear when every undead group from the fountain room through the Master Wight room is defeated and no hostile encounters trigger while re-crossing these rooms.

Tactics notes
Characters must be conscious to earn experience, so revive anyone dropping toward -10 HP with cure spells or salves. Undead here are broadly vulnerable to Turn Undead, and magic missile remains reliable against Mohrg and Wights. These tactics come from the community guide written for the 2001 original; the 2026 SNEG re-release on Steam preserves the original gameplay, with an optional Legacy mode, so the same route applies.
FAQ
Which enemies does the First Cellar center event list in total?
Event 99 lists 7 Mohrg, 23 Wights, 4 Master Wights, 4 Skeleton Lords, a Master Wraith, and a Revenant across its encounters; the route above covers the first two rooms in detail.
How do I survive the Master Wights?
Cast Turn Undead on the Master Wights to hold them in place, kill the 4 ordinary Wights first, then focus down the held Masters.
Where can I heal mid-event?
The healing fountain in the four-door room heals the party after the first battle, and green rest icons in closed-door rooms let you sleep safely.
Check note: route details are summarized from the GameFAQs walkthrough by AIssil, and the re-release context comes from the official Steam page. The loot drops and the later encounters in this event (Skeleton Lords, Master Wraith, Revenant) are not covered in full detail here and remain unconfirmed by a second walkthrough source.
